Canning supplies and equipment:

(1) Apples A five gallon bucket will produce about 7 quarts of apple sauce.

(2) Sugar 1/4 cup of sugar for one jar of apple sauce.

(3) Canning Funnel

(4) Strainers Victorian Strainer, Food Strainer, or mashing tool.

(5) Streamer juicer or stock pot.

(6) Boiling water canner.

How to prepare you apples

(1) Using a different variety of apples in each batch will give your apple sauce a better flavor.

(2) Cut your apple into four pieces.

(3) f you are using a Victorian strainer the core and seeds will be removed. However, I you are not using a Victorian Strainer you need to core and peel your apple.

(4) If your apples have bad spots do not throw them away. Instead just cut the bad spots out.

(5) Now wash your apples in cold water.

Cooking your apples

(1) Using a stock pot If you are using a stock pot to cook your apples. Add just enough water so that your apples will not stick. Then boil them until they are soft. However, make sure that you stir your apples while they are boiling which will distribute the heat evening and will help keep your apples from burning.

(2) Using a Steamer Juicer My mother who is an amazing hillbilly cook always uses a steamer juicer when she cans her apple sauce.

(a) The steamer juicer has three sections fill the bottom half with water and the top           half with apples.

(b).Now turn your lid on your apples an turn the heat  on high. Then cook your apples until they are soft. The beauty of using a juicer is that you do not have to stir your apples and they will not burn.

(c) Juice will collect in the third section. So if you do not want to lose any flavor save your juice and add to the apple sauce.

If you would like to purchase a stock pot, May I suggest that you order one from Camp Chef.
